Our Story
Pirate Coffee Roasters was founded by husband-and-wife team Damian and Tracey Hamilton after years working across technology, strategy, media and business innovation — combined with a lifelong love of coffee, community and adventure.
The name "Pirate Coffee" reflects an independent spirit: creative, slightly rebellious, community-minded and unwilling to follow the standard corporate playbook.
What began as a small-batch roasting project evolved into a specialty coffee roastery, brew bar and community space in Nelson Bay, NSW. Today, Pirate Coffee combines specialty coffee roasting with social impact, regional community building and creative collaborations across Port Stephens and beyond.

Our coffees are sourced from respected producing regions across Central America, South America, Africa and the Asia-Pacific — ethically sourced from the best growers, through trusted importers who value quality, sustainability and long-term relationships throughout the supply chain.
Because coffee is an agricultural product, we embrace seasonality, freshness and variation between harvests. That's part of what makes specialty coffee interesting.
Coffee Origins We Love
We have a soft spot for the rich, chocolatey notes of Central and South American beans — but we're equally drawn to Indonesian and African origins, and we're always open to discovering new tastes and regions.

Sustainability & Ethics
As a young, independent business, we're constantly reviewing our practices and looking for ways to improve. We don't claim to have it all figured out — and we think that honesty matters.
One example: we trialled compostable packaging bags, which sounded wonderful in theory — until they started composting in our storeroom within six months. Still some things to improve.
What we do offer:

- Fill your own for in-store visitors — bring a container and we'll fill it fresh
We source through importers who value long-term, quality-focused relationships with growers. We're committed to doing better, and we're transparent about the journey.

We understand that hospitality and small business operators are under pressure, so we aim to make working together straightforward and supportive.
Fresh Coffee, Roasted to Order
We roast in small batches to maximise freshness and consistency. Most online orders are packed and dispatched from Nelson Bay within 1–3 business days and shipped Australia-wide.
We supply coffee for home espresso machines, filter brewing, offices, cafés, hospitality venues, tourism operators, gifts and subscriptions. Our customers range from casual coffee drinkers through to very serious coffee nerds with extremely expensive grinders. We welcome both equally.
